Membership in the Law Society of Botswana

Below, we have outlined the detailed steps and requirements to guide you through the membership application process.

Academic Qualifications

  • Obtain a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or an equivalent recognized law degree from a reputable university or institution. Ensure that the degree program includes core subjects relevant to Botswana law.

  • If you hold a law degree from outside Botswana, it is recommended to have your qualifications evaluated by the Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) to confirm equivalency.

Practical Legal Training

Complete a period of practical legal training known as articles of clerkship or pupillage. This involves working under the supervision of a practicing attorney in Botswana.

The duration of the practical training may vary, typically ranging from two to five year, depending on requirements and the specific legal organization or institution you are associated with.

Admissions Examination

Successfully pass the Botswana Admissions Examination administered by the Attorney General's Chambers. The examination assesses candidates on their knowledge of Botswana law, legal procedure, legal ethics, and professional responsibility.

The Attorney General's Chambers conducts the examination periodically, and specific dates and details will be announced by the Chambers.
